What Happens and What To Do
If a Death Occurs at Home
If your loved one passes away at home and their death was expected, contact their GP surgery as soon as possible so a doctor can issue a medical certificate.
Outside of surgery hours, call 111 for assistance.
If there is no GP, 111 can arrange the appropriate medical support or an ambulance.If a Death Occurs in a Hospital or Care Home
If your loved one dies in a hospital or nursing home, the staff will guide you through the next steps.
A bereavement or patient affairs office will usually:-
Complete the initial paperwork and issue the cause of death certificate.

Advise on registering the death and choosing a funeral director.

Return any personal belongings.

Provide details of local support services.

If the Death is Unexpected or Sudden
If the death is sudden or unexpected, call 999 immediately and follow the operator’s advice.
An ambulance and/or police may attend.
If the cause is unclear, the coroner’s officer will arrange for your loved one to be taken to a mortuary.
If police visit, avoid disturbing the area unless it’s essential to help the person.If the Death is Unexpected or Sudden
